WESF plays a role in promoting standardization and eliminating global trade barriers.
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and its fully integrated committee, the U.S. National Committee (USNC) of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), are seeking comments on a proposal for a new Joint Technical Committee (JTC) of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the IEC on standardization in the field of Digital Product Passports.
Digital Product Passports (DPPs), which share product information across the entire product lifecycle, can be used as a means to increase transparency and unlock circularity.
DIN, the ISO member for Germany, submitted the proposal for a new ISO/IEC JTC with the following scope statement:
“Standardization in the field of Digital Product Passport. Development of deliverables for the deployment of Digital Product Passports (DPP) ensuring cross sectoral and cross system interoperability enabling the supply chain information flow. This includes the framework of the DPP System and the DPP Ecosystem as well as the basics for both. The new JTC does not develop sector specific standards and standards to be used for DPP-system or DPP-data which are already covered by the scope of other ISO and IEC TCs [Technical Committees].”
The proposal asserts that when aiming to create a comprehensive solution that supports inclusion across all sectors and systems, it is insufficient to ask individual ISO and IEC technical committees to collaborate and develop a unified framework. The proposed JTC is intended to be horizontal, encompassing sectors, systems, and components. This requires a committee to draft and publish standards and to liaise with others to harmonize efforts across the organizations, while individual technical committees can continue to focus on their particular domains and aspects.
Stakeholders are invited to review the proposal and provide their comments to Sara Desautels, ANSI senior director of international policy, at sdesautels@ansi.org or Megan Pahl, program manager, USNC team, at mpahl@ansi.org by close of business on Thursday, October 9, 2025. All input received will be used to develop a recommended positions and comments, which will be sent to ANSI and USNC governance groups for final approval before submittal to ISO by the November 28, 2025 voting deadline and to the IEC by the November 27, 2025 voting deadline.
Details about a webinar for relevant U.S. stakeholders are forthcoming.
