Cybersecurity threats can cripple entire industries, and security requirements have to evolve as quickly as new threats emerge. A recent Workcred Expert Series video episode explores how certifications can provide the crucial skills needed for cybersecurity in areas that are constantly undergoing evolution.

Expert guest Brian Correia, director of business development at GIAC Certifications, talks about the importance of certifications in the verification of critically-needed cybersecurity skills to practitioners and employers, providing evidence that professionals and prospective hires have the necessary knowledge and abilities to get the ever-changing job done.

Correia explained how certifications in cybersecurity update as often as 3-4 times per year to keep pace with the evolving threat landscape. “You're really trying to offer skills validation for that community,” he noted, emphasizing how certifications verify practitioners have necessary capabilities.

Dr. Roy Swift, executive director of Workcred, highlighted another crucial factor: accreditation: “Only about 10 to 15% of certifications in this country are accredited by a third party, which is one of the things that the public should be looking at,” said Dr. Swift. To that end, according to Correia, accredited certifications are becoming increasingly critical in the cybersecurity field, especially given emerging directives and regulations that make proper accreditation a requirement to validate skills.
